How long will a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy stay on my credit report?

If you file a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in California, the Chapter 7 Bankruptcy will appear on your credit report for ten years.  This does not mean that you will begin to obtain credit after the ten years have passed.  On the contrary, once your bankruptcy is discharged (which typically takes approximately four to five months from the date of filing bankruptcy), you can take steps to rebuild your credit.  One step is to obtain a secured credit card.    Make sure your payments are timely made towards your secured credit card.
